MANCHESTER United and Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana has been recognised with the prestigious FIFPRO Player Impact Award for his impactful humanitarian efforts in Cameroon and across Africa. The 28-year-old’s work through the André Onana Foundation has delivered free healthcare and complex surgeries to underprivileged communities, transforming countless lives in sub-Saharan Africa.
A legacy of giving back
Onana’s foundation, which initially focused on assisting blind children in Cameroon, has expanded its mission to provide comprehensive medical care, sports broadcaster ESPN reported on Tuesday. Over the past three years, the foundation’s network of medical professionals has conducted over 1,200 surgeries, ranging from eye operations to life-saving procedures.
Reflecting on his journey during the award presentation, Onana expressed gratitude for those who supported him during his football career. ‘When I passed through Barcelona, Amsterdam and Milan on my way to Manchester United, I had people who helped me on that journey,’ Onana said.
‘When I was down, they gave me a hand so that I could stand up. I’ve never forgotten the help I received. Because of the people in the past who supported me, I feel I have a responsibility to give back and help others.
‘When I started the André Onana Foundation, the idea was to help blind children in Cameroon. We received a lot of support and it’s since grown to become an NGO that provides free medical care and surgeries to children and adults from underprivileged communities.’
Recognising a footballer’s broader impact
FIFPRO, the global union for professional footballers, praised Onana’s dedication to making a difference off the pitch. As part of the award, FIFPRO is donating $10,000 to the André Onana Foundation to further its vital work.
This accolade makes Onana the second Manchester United player to receive the Player Impact Award. Marcus Rashford previously earned the honour in 2020 for his advocacy to provide free school meals to disadvantaged children in the UK.
A standout season for Onana
While excelling off the pitch, Onana has also remained a key figure on it, starting every Premier League match for Manchester United this season. Known for his resilience and leadership, the Cameroonian goalkeeper continues to make headlines for his commitment to both his sport and his community.
