Ebonyi NLC Declares One-Week Warning Strike Over Unfulfilled Minimum Wage

THE Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to begin a one-week warning strike on Monday, December 2, 2024, in protest of the state government’s failure to implement the new national minimum wage.

Prof. Ogugua Egwu, the NLC State Chairman, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abakaliki, confirming that all affiliated unions in the state will join the strike to express their dissatisfaction with the government’s neglect of workers’ welfare.

Egwu explained that the decision to strike follows a directive issued by the national NLC on November 8, 2024, urging state councils in states that have not complied with the new wage policy to take appropriate action, based on collective bargaining agreements, to demand its swift implementation.

On behalf of the entire State Council, we hereby notify the public of a one-week warning strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress in Ebonyi State. This action underscores our resolve to ensure the rights of workers are upheld and the minimum wage is implemented without further delay,” Egwu said.

The strike will involve all unions under the NLC umbrella, marking a unified protest against what they consider the state government’s disregard for the welfare of its workers.
