US Senators Condemn China For Distorting UN Resolution 2758

THE United States has strongly criticised China for what it describes as the misuse of a United Nations resolution to isolate Taiwan.

A bipartisan group of US senators introduced a resolution reaffirming American support for Taiwan and rejecting Beijing’s claims over the island. The move comes amid growing tensions over Taiwan’s international recognition and participation in global organisations.

The resolution challenges China’s interpretation of UN Resolution 2758, which was passed in 1971 and transferred China’s seat at the UN from Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China.

The US senators argue that China has been “weaponising” this resolution to justify its sovereignty claims over Taiwan, even though the resolution did not explicitly address Taiwan’s political status.

Senators Jim Risch, Jeanne Shaheen, Pete Ricketts, and Chris Coons introduced the resolution in the US Senate. They emphasised that China’s actions are aimed at coercing other nations into recognising its “One China” principle while suppressing Taiwan’s ability to engage with the international community.

The resolution makes it clear that the US does not recognise Beijing’s claim over Taiwan and remains committed to supporting the island’s participation in global affairs.

Senator Risch strongly criticised China’s attempts to manipulate history and exert pressure on international institutions. He reaffirmed that the US sees through Beijing’s tactics and will continue standing with Taiwan.

Senator Shaheen echoed similar sentiments, saying that preventing Taiwan’s participation in the UN weakens global support for the island and that the US will not allow China to dictate international norms.

Senator Pete Ricketts warned that China’s campaign to promote its “One China” principle is designed to isolate and eventually take control of Taiwan. He stressed the need to counter Beijing’s revisionist history and support Taiwan’s rightful place on the world stage.

The proposed resolution also reaffirms that the US “One China policy” is distinct from China’s “One China principle” and does not imply recognition of Beijing’s claims over Taiwan.

Taiwan welcomed the resolution, with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim expressing gratitude for the US Senate’s stance. In a social media post, she thanked Senator Risch for calling out China’s tactics and reaffirming support for Taiwan’s global engagement.
